Colin Turkington doubles up in Donington race two

Team BMW’s Colin Turkington doubled up with a second consecutive victory in race two of the 2019 British Touring Car Championship at Donington Park.

The three-time BTCC champion enjoyed another lights-to-flag victory with safety car restarts again proving the hardest challenge he had to face en route to victory.

Halfords Yuasa Racing’s Matt Neal progressed from fourth on the grid to second after making a robust move on Tom Oliphant for third before sweeping around the outside of Sutton at Redgate for second position.

Sutton secured his second podium of the day in third, initially running second after making a late lunge on Oliphant at the Old Hairpin on the opening lap.

He and Turkington then led the pack with a margin of a few seconds before losing their advantage when a safety car was necessitated following contact between Mark Blundell and Sam Osborne at the final chicane.

The 2017 champion had to defend heavily from Motorbase’s Tom Chilton in the closing stages as the Subaru Levorg again appeared to struggle with top-end speed.

Completing the top five was AmD Tuning’s Rory Butcher, who also set the fastest lap over the 19 tours of the Leicestershire circuit, ahead of the Power Maxed Racing duo of Jason Plato and Rob Collard in sixth and seventh respectively.

Collard, who was the best of the hard tyre runners in the second contest, fended off Josh Cook’s Honda at the flag by just two tenths, after the latter progressed from 24th on the grid after a puncture cost him in race one.

Cook’s BTC Racing team-mate beached his Honda Civic in the gravel on the inside of the Old Hairpin after contact with Jack Goff at Redgate snapped his right-rear suspension.

That brought out the second safety car period, before the race returned to action with a handful of laps to go.

As the battle for fifth intensified between Butcher and Oliphant, Cook tried to capitalise but spun the BMW at Redgate, demoting Oliphant to 17th at the flag.

Behind Cook in ninth was Jake Hill’s Audi, which made great progress from his starting position of 30th, with Tom Ingram’s Toyota Corolla rounding out the top ten on the hard tyre.

Ollie Jackson made amends for his DNF in race one in 11th, with Adam Morgan rewarding Ciceley Motorsport with 12th after his Mercedes A-Class required a full front-end change after heavy damage with Andrew Jordan in race one.

Halfords Yuasa Racing’s Dan Cammish recovered well from a drive-through penalty for being out of position on the grid, eventually coming home 13th after serving his penalty following the first safety car period.

Sam Tordoff had another disappointing race as he and team-mate Butcher had been making rapid progress before contact with Plato through Hollywood sent Tordoff spinning across the grass at the Craner Curves.

Carl Boardley scored the final point in 15th just ahead of Team HARD stablemate Michael Crees.

The final race of the day at Donington Park gets underway at 17:15 BST, with Tom Ingram drawn on reverse-grid pole.
