Daniel Juncadella strolls to maiden DTM victory in Brands Hatch race one

The return to Brands Hatch for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters after a five-year absence saw Daniel Juncadella take a very comfortable maiden DTM victory around the 3.908-km circuit, being the first Spanish driver since Miguel Molina at the first race at the Hockenheim finale in 2016 to do so.

He finished 7.896 seconds ahead of BMW’s Augusto Farfus, with  Mercedes compatriot Lucas Auer completing the podium under British sunshine.

René Rast was the best of the Audi Sport drivers finishing in fourth place, whilst Philipp Eng kept Gary Paffett at bay for the last spot in the top five by just 0.387 seconds at the finish.

Pascal Wehrlein was seventh, having battled with Edoardo Mortara for position before the pair elected to pit, with the latter having another trip through the gravel at Paddock Hill Bend.

Marco Wittmann was the third driver from BMW to secure points in the top ten, finishing ninth, ahead of the charging Mike Rockenfeller, who took tenth place from Robin Frijns just before the finish.

The 2013 champion carried out the overtake of the race, as he went three-wide into Pilgrim’s Drop with Timo Glock and Jamie Gren, before overtaking the pair of them for what was 11th place into Hawthorns.

Frijns would also lose out to Green on the last lap, with the Dutchman finishing in 12th place behind the Briton.

The BMW pair of Timo Glock and Joel Eriksson would take 13th and 14th respecitvely, with Nico Müller rounded out the top fifteen.

Paul Di Resta’s 100 percent points-finish run ended after the race, as the Scotsman would end up down at the back end of the field in 16th, ahead of Bruno Spengler

Loïc Duval was the only driver to not complete the race distance at around the three minute mark, going straight on into the barriers at Druids after locking up on cold tyres, following his mandatory pitstop.

As a result, the Audi Sport driver’s collision with the barriers would make Race Control employ the enforcement of Slow Zones one to three for around ten minutes of the race.

The Frenchman is also under investigation for an unsafe release after his pit stop, which put him into the path of Di Resta straight into the fast lane.

The final free practice session of the weekend starts at 1000 local time, lasting for 20 minutes.
