Jack Goff ‘diamond doubles’ up in second Snetterton qualifying

Eurotech Racing’s Jack Goff took a second successive pole position in qualifying for the ‘diamond double’ British Touring Car Championship race at Snetterton, setting a new lap record in the ballast-free session.

With 27 kg of weight removed from his car, Goff went almost half a second faster than he had done earlier in the afternoon to claim pole position for Sunday’s final, double distance, race in Norfolk.

In the process, the Honda driver took home two bonus points for his second pole of the day, moving him to just one point from Adam Morgan in sixth place in the drivers’ championship standings.

Honda’s Matt Neal claimed second on the grid with a lap almost three tenths slower than Goff in the newer FK8 Civic.

Motorbase Performance’s Tom Chilton was delighted to claim third in his Ford Focus, after having suffered from an engine failure earlier in the day which necessitated an engine change ahead of first qualifying.

Speedworks Motorsport’s Tom Ingram was fourth in his Toyota, ahead of the second Halfords Yuasa Racing Honda of Dan Cammish in fifth.

Andrew Jordan was the leading BMW driver in sixth, over half a second off the pace, ahead of the leading Mercedes of Ciceley Motorsport’s Adam Morgan in seventh.

Team BMW’s Colin Turkington ended up in eighth, despite having been the pace-setter halfway through the 15-minute shootout with a lap of 1:55.400, before his time was disallowed for exceeding track limits.

The second Eurotech Honda of Brett Smith and Ciceley Motorsport’s Tom Oliphant completed the top ten, with Smith having also had his best lap disallowed for exceeding track limits.

Power Maxed Racing’s Josh Cook was unable to replicate his pace from first qualifying, despite losing 15 kg of ballast, and ended the session in 11th as the best Vauxhall racer, whilst his team-mate Senna Proctor was 20th.

Neither of the two Subaru’s made the top ten, with Ash Sutton in 15th, over a second off the pace, and Jason Plato in 23rd, with a deficit of 1.727 seconds to the top.

HMS Racing’s Rob Austin left it until the last moment to post a time, ending up in 25th in his Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

Race one gets underway at 11:30 BST on Sunday.
