Marco Wittmann still on a high after home win

After a drama-filled hour-long race at the Norisring for race two of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters weekend, home hero Marco Wittmann was overcome with pure emotion, having won his first race on the banks by the Dutzendteich.

Even though he had started down the order in seventh, several overtakes allowed the two-time champion to take the win, despite coming under pressure from race one winner Edoardo Mortara and race two pole setter Daniel Juncadella.

“I think my heart is still racing. These emotions are just crazy. It’s not every day that you win your home race,” admitted the 28-year-old, who took his second race win of the year.

“I have been trying here for so long and this is the first time it’s worked out. I would never have thought that I’d manage to move up from seventh to first. We had fantastic pace. I drove the race of my life – with some wild overtaking manoeuvres.”

Wittmann becomes the fifth different race winner this season, and now moves into third place on 92 points, but goes ahead of Timo Glock on account of his two wins to Glock’s one.

He also praised the efforts of Stefan Reinhold’s Team RMG outfit, who have been involved with Wittmann’s successes in the DTM, which includes his two titles.

“My guys did an unbelievable job. The car was sensational. It is wonderful to be heading home from the Norisring with two trophies.”

“It is fantastic. Marco surpassed himself once again today,” stated Reinhold, whose outfit now moves up to fifth in the teams’ standings after two trips to the podium for Wittmann in the same weekend.

“Our team can be really happy with this victory. We really wanted to win here today. The lads did a great job today and the pit stops were perfect. It was a tough weekend but we kept our nerve.”
