Dan Lloyd converts reverse grid pole into maiden BTCC victory

Daniel Lloyd claimed his maiden victory in the British Touring Car Championship in the final race at Croft.

Starting on pole position due to a reversed top-nine, Lloyd weathered an early challenge from Motorbase’s Tom Chilton and eased clear to win by X seconds.

It not only marks his first race win in the category after only rejoining in the Honda Civic Type R two weeks ago at Oulton Park, but also the maiden race victory for Bert Taylor’s BTC Norlin Racing outfit.

Chilton duly came home in second in the Ford Focus RS, though Power Maxed Racing’s Senna Proctor kept him honest to the chequered flag to complete the rostrum.

The battle for fourth proved a thrilling scrap, in a sequence of events triggered by a bold overtaking move by double Croft race-winner Ash Sutton on Matt Neal at the Hairpin.

The two then made contact again disputing the position on the following run down to Clervaux, with the Subaru forced wide into the gravel and skimming the tyre barriers before rejoining at the rear of the four-car scrap.

Though he would re-pass Andrew Jordan, Sutton was powerless to prevent points leader Colin Turkington taking fifth, and with it extending his title advantage to 19 points heading into the summer break.

Sam Tordoff could do nothing to challenge the quartet but rounded out a strong weekend for Team GardX Racing in eighth ahead of Tom Ingram’s Toyota Avensis and a weekend-best showing for Tom Oliphant and Ciceley Motorsport in tenth.

Dan Cammish wasn’t quite able to replicate his team-mate’s form in 11th but held off a charging Rob Collard behind.

Adam Morgan finally salvaged some points from a miserable venture to the 2.1 mile Yorkshire circuit to keep himself in the championship frame with 13th.

Rory Butcher took points for the third successive race in 14th, with Matt Simpson rounding out the top 15.

Jason Plato looked a dark horse in the midfield with no ballast but ultimately wasn’t able to mount a challenge and took the chequered flag 19th.

So as the championship heads into a 6-week break before heading to Snetterton on 28-29 July, it’s Team BMW’s Colin Turkington who holds a 19 point advantage.
