Esteban Guerrieri claims victory in second WTCR Nordschleife race

Argentinian racer Esteban Guerrieri secured victory in the second FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, ahead of Pepe Oriola and Frèdèric Vervisch.

Guerrieri took the lead at the start in his Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic Type R from reverse grid pole-sitter Pepe Oriola, and would then control the race to take the win.

Oriola said before the race he was aiming for second position, and managed to secure exactly that, taking his first podium of the season in the process.

Frèdèric Vervisch took his first WTCR podium by dragging past race one winner Yvan Muller on the long Döttinger Höhe back straight on the final lap.

Muller held on for fourth, ahead of Norbert Michelisz, who also made a move on the final lap for fifth position on the Honda of Yann Ehrlacher.

In seventh position finishing reigning TCR International champion Jean-Karl Vernay.

Next was Gordon Shedden’s in his Audi RS 3 LMS, which was lucky to escape damage after contact with points leader Gabriele Tarquini, who continued a torrid weekend with further contact with the barriers on the Nordschleife to record no points.

Tarquini will not start the final race of the day, due to the fast turnaround in between races and the substantial damage to his Hyundai.

Wildcard entry Rene Rast was hopeful of a win after his front-row start, but a clash on the opening lap with 2012 World Touring Car Champion Rob Huff meant they both retired from the race.

Race three polesitter Thed Björk came into the pits mid-race after he hit the barrier in avoidance of Tarquini’s Hyundai.

After taking the victory, Guerrieri said: “Between the driving flat out on the Nordschleife and the celebration which I had planned for a while I am quite excited and tired. It was a tough race.

“We knew what was our strong points on the Civic Type R and what were the weak points so we pushed for the strong. I did a very good start and we managed to take P1.

“I controlled the race in a certain way from the guys. Yesterday we couldn’t find a good balance. But last night we looked after every detail and made the car as good as it was yesterday. We pushed and here we are. P1.”

Race three of the weekend gets underway at 12:20 CEST (11:20 BST).
