Lloyd holds off Moffat to win action-packed inaugural TCR UK race

Daniel Lloyd put in a composed performance to convert the first ever TCR UK Series pole position into the inaugural race victory behind the wheel of a WestCoast Racing-run Volkswagen Golf GTi.

The former British Touring Car Championship racer made a textbook start and eased into the lead, trading lap times with Aiden Moffat’s Alfa Romeo Guilietta TCR until the chequered flag to continue his perfect start to the season.

Moffat looked to have secured the runner-up spot, but a dramatic five second penalty for exceeding track limits on the final lap looked to have dropped the Laser Tools Racing driver to fourth behind Pyro Motorsport’s Ollie Taylor and WestCoast’s Andreas Backman.

The penalty, however, was removed shortly after the race ended, ensuring the Scotsman still finished as the runner-up, with Taylor completing the podium ahead of Backman.

Howard Fuller (Sean Walkinshaw Racing) held Finlay Crocker’s Honda Civic Type R FK8 at bay despite some dramatic side-by-side racing through the complex at Brooklands, Luffield and Woodcote, but another track limits penalty for the latter eased the pressure as they finished fifth and sixth.

LMS Racing’s Olli Kangas recovered from contact with Lewis Kent through Copse to finish seventh on the road as the highest-placed CUPRA TCR, holding off pressure from Andreas’ sibling Jessica in the final WestCoast VW.

Stewart Lines claimed the DSG Trophy honours in ninth in the Maximum Motorsport CUPRA, though had Carl Swift not spun at Brooklands in the early stages it might have panned out differently.

Kent struggled to recover from some lively door-to-door action at the start and eventually rounded out the field in eleventh.

One of those incidents left Darelle Wilson’s Vauxhall Astra in the gravel after contact under braking at Beckett’s, whilst the sister Alfa Romeo Guilietta of Derek Palmer Jnr was forced to retire at half distance with an engine issue after a spirited fightback from the rear of the field.

The second TCR UK Series race will get underway at 16:05.
