Tom Ingram fastest in second practice at Silverstone

Speedworks Motorsport’s Tom Ingram snatched the fastest lap in second practice for the British Touring Car Championship at the Silverstone National Circuit in the last minute of the session, on an almost completely dry circuit that was still cold and overcast.

The Mercedes’ of both Ciceley Motorsport’s Adam Morgan and Laser Tools Racing’s Aiden Moffat were the quickest initially after the first 15 minutes of practice, with none of the championship protagonists being featured.

Ash Sutton was down in 22nd, ahead of defending champion Gordon Shedden, whilst Colin Turkington, who had suffered from electrical problems in the first practice session of the day, was way down the order in 32nd.

Michael Epps and Dave Newsham continued their strong start in the session, putting in solid times during the first half, but fell back down the order during the second.

Eurotech Racing’s Brett Smith put in a brilliant 59.484 and was briefly fastest until spinning into the gravel at Becketts, causing a yellow flag in sector one whilst he was recovered.

At the half way stage, the top three were  Epps, Rob Collard and Jack Goff, with just 0.067 seconds splitting the three.

Many of the teams then changed from the Dunlop hard tyre to the prime compound, in order to see what they could do in the second half of the session.

Once again, there were plenty of track limit warnings given – on one lap alone, Collard, Stephen Jelley, Ant Whorton-Eales, Aron Taylor-Smith, Will Burns and Stewart Lines all received the black and white flag warnings.

Meanwhile, Morgan, Rory Butcher, Ollie Jackson, Newsham and Sutton all went on to receive black flags for continued track limit demeanours.

About 20 minutes in, the Eurotech Honda of Goff put in a fastest time of 59.134 with Turkington and Shedden still struggling to put in quick times, sitting in 28th and 30th respectively.

With just 14 minutes remaining, Turkington finally managed to get a lap time under 1 minute, posting a 59.684 which was just 0.007 faster than Sutton, but still only good enough for 11th.  Shedden followed with a faster lap of 59.748, putting him in 16th.

With just 12 minutes left, the Championship leaders were in 12th (Turkington), 13th (Sutton) and 14th (Shedden) with less than a tenth between them and Collard sitting in 8th.

MG Racing RCIB Insurance’s Josh Cook (who is racing under appeal of exclusion this weekend), registered a 59.260, which with 10 minutes remaining was good enough for third fastest.

In the last dying moments of the session, the top three were Goff, Ingram and Cook and almost everyone made a trip to the pits to make last minute adjustments for a final push.  Turkington managed a 59.503 which put him 11th and provided a bit of space between himself and Sutton and Shedden who were still down in 15th and 16th.

In the last minute, Ingram put together a fantastic lap of 58.967 leaving him fastest in second practice, followed by Goff and Jake Hill. Turkington finished in 10th with Shedden in 22nd and Sutton in 23rd (not being able to make use of the full session due to his black flag).

Qualifying is scheduled to take place at 15:15 BST
