Tiago Monteiro returns home to Portugal after Barcelona test crash

Tiago Monteiro has returned home to Portugal, after suffering from a huge crash in testing for the World Touring Car Championship in Barcelona last week.

The Portuguese driver was involved in an accident at the first corner of the track, during a private test session for Honda.

Since then the 2017 title contender has been monitored closely, and the Castrol Honda WTCC team have released a further statement on the 41-year-old’s condition.

“We are very pleased to report that FIA World Touring Car Championship leader Tiago Monteiro has returned to Portugal for the first time since his recent testing incident at Barcelona.

“After receiving medical clearance, Tiago was today (Friday, September 15) transferred to a hospital in his home country.

“He will continue his recovery there for at least another few days before returning home.

“On behalf of Tiago, his family, and Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team, we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for all the ‘get well soon’ messages, which are greatly appreciated.

“A further update will be issued in due course.”

Monteiro is recovering with the aim of taking part in the WTCC Race of China at the brand new Ningbo International Speedpark on October 13 – 15.
