Speedworks Motorsport’s Tom Ingram set the early pace in first practice for the British Touring Car Championship at Snetterton, ahead of Subaru’s Ash Sutton in a relatively quiet session.
Ingram, who has dropped to fifth overall in the drivers’ championship standings, some 48 points away from leader Gordon Shedden, was just over a tenth clear of the Subaru of Sutton, having hit the top of the timesheets after 25 minutes of the 45-minute session.
Sutton also went to the top half of the times at the same stage, whilst Ciceley Motorsport’s Adam Morgan ended up in third, with all three drivers not improving at all in the second half of the sunny and dry session.
Andrew Jordan was the leading BMW driver in fourth, just nine thousandths of a second in front of team-mate Colin Turkington in fifth, the duo having improved in the second half of the session.
Eurotech Racing’s Jack Goff was sixth quickest, ahead of Handy Motorsport’s Rob Austin in seventh and an impressive showing by BTC Norlin Racing’s Chris Smiley in eighth, who improved late-on in the session.
Subaru’s James Cole was another late improver in ninth, and he was also the last driver to be within a second of the pace in an unusually spread out field. AmD Tuning’s Ollie Jackson completed the top ten.
Championship leader Gordon Shedden was just 20th in his fully ballast-laden Honda Civic, some 1.5 seconds off the pace.
Rob Collard, who is second in the standings, also struggled for pace in practice, giving his BMW just the 17th fastest time.
Árón Taylor-Smith, who is still recovering somewhat after his huge shunt at Croft in early June, was 22nd quickest in his repaired MG.
Second practice takes place at 12:10 BST, with qualifying following at 15:50 BST.
