Colin Turkington admits he has ‘ground to make up’

In the fight for this year’s British Touring Car Championship drivers’ title, Colin Turkington is one of the top contenders that will be battling until the end of the season, even with having a trickier start to the year than team mate Rob Collard.

Having come back to Dick Bennetts’ West Surrey Racing after a two-year spell at BMR, the Ulsterman stated that he has enjoyed his return to the outfit, along with the team currently leading both the teams’ and manufacturers’ standings after Croft.

“We’re only at the halfway stage of the season and there’s still everything to play for,” said the two-time champion, who is 12 points behind leader Gordon Shedden and just one behind Collard.

“I have a little bit of ground to make up because of a bad weekend at Oulton Park, and that proves you need to maximise your points at every event to stay in contention.”

Turkington has won four times at the 2.969-mile circuit, the first of which was with the WSR-run Team RAC back in 2009, along with seven other podiums coming with the Sunbury-upon-Thames-based outfit along the 13 seasons that he has raced in the BTCC.

He comes into this round with 57 kilograms of success ballast, but with the assistance of the rear-wheel drive properties of the BMW, it should help him take a good haul of points in Norfolk.

“I’m pretty optimistic that I can score well this weekend, and continue to close in on the lead of the points table.”
