Robert Wickens: “I have no urge to leave the DTM”

Mercedes-AMG Motorsport driver Robert Wickens will continue to race in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters for the foreseeable future, even though the Canadian had a late call-up to replace Mikhail Aleshin in the Verizon IndyCar Series last week.

The Guelph native, whose C63 Coupé will be running another special livery this weekend to celebrate “50 Years of AMG,” admitted that he has no real reason to move away from the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters at this moment in time.

“Not really, to be honest. I just want to race cars. That’s the main thing. Everything is going well, and I’m really happy with Mercedes.”

Along with having raced with the VfB Stuttgart livery for the first two race weekends, Wickens is not worried with what the car looks like when he gets into his “office” each time.

“When I’m inside the car I don’t see the difference. But I think it’s cool as long as the fans like it. Fifty years of AMG is obviously a big deal, and I’m happy to represent that on my car this weekend.” said the eight-time race winner, who is currently ninth in the standings, 48 points behind leader René Rast.

The 28-year-old, who has won at Norisring twice in 2014 and 2015, admits that he has not got any major expectations for the coming weekend, especially with the way DTM become so competitive this year with the new regulations.

“I was very fortunate to have had very good results at Norisring in the years past, but that doesn’t mean that we’re going to have the same thing again. We have to work very hard,” explained the HWA driver, who isn’t really sure as to whether the Stuttgart brand may have any sort of upper hand scenario on their rivals.

“The team around me has done a great job all year, although our results have been a little bit up and down. It would be great to score some big points this weekend.”
