Attila Tassi takes maiden TCR win in front of home crowd

Attila Tassi scored his first-ever win in the TCR International Series in front of a home crowd at the Hungaroring, as he led home a M1RA 1-2 finish, with Norbert Michelisz in second and Leopard Racing’s Jean-Karl Vernay in third.

Tassi moved past team-mate Michelisz at the very start of the race, taking the lead before Turn 1 and remaining in charge of the race thereafter. The win for Tassi means he moves to eight points from the championship lead.

For his part, Michelisz did exactly as he said he would, helping Tassi in his battle for the championship and holding station in second, keeping the Volkswagen of Vernay behind him. The result also gives Michelisz a first TCR International podium in his first race in the series.

Roberto Colciago took the chequered flag in fourth, meaning the M1RA team just missed out on a perfect 1-2-3 finish on home soil. The result gives the Italian the championship lead over Vernay by just three points.

Craft-Bamboo Racing’s Pepe Oriola headed up his two team-mates in fifth, despite putting serious pressure on Colciago’s Honda ahead for the position. Brits Dan Lloyd and James Nash finished in sixth and seventh respectively.

WestCoast Racing duo Giacomo Altoè and Gianni Morbidelli were eighth and ninth respectively, having swapped positions on lap ten as Altoè got past his more experienced team-mate into Turn 1.

DG Sport Compétition’s Mat’o Homola completed the top ten, having put in a determined drive from the back of the grid. The Opel Astra racer put in a particularly determined pass on GE-Force’s Davit Kajaia at Turn 1 on lap 11 to take the final points position.

Kajaia finished as the leading Alfa Romeo driver in 11th, whilst team-mate Dušan Borković retired from the race in the pit lane after seven laps with an issue on his car.

Former points leader Stefano Comini was unable to make any headway in the session, with the Comtoyou Racing Audi driver ending the race in 12th place to record only his second non-points finish of the season.

Also stopping with issues on their cars during the race were Leopard Racing’s Rob Huff, after two laps whilst running in sixth, and Comtoyou Racing’s Frédéric Vervisch, after seven laps. Neither drivers were able to make it back to the pits with their issues, with Vervisch needing to be recovered at Turn 4.

The second race at the Hungaroring takes place at 13:00 CEST (12:00 BST).
