Stefano Comini: ‘I won the title with my head’

Stefano Comini believes that he was able to successfully defend his TCR International Series crown by thinking with his head, after two chaotic and interrupted races in Macau.

Comini went into the final weekend of the season with a points gap to leader James Nash, but the Swiss racer was able to turn things around on the streets of Macau.

After qualifying on the front row of the grid, Comini passed team-mate Jean-Karl Vernay early on in race one to take a much needed win – even if it only came with half points due to the race being severely interrupted.

The second race saw more of the same for the Swiss racer, although he was able to start from pole position due to a change in the sporting regulations for the event.

In the end, with half points again being awarded, Comini took the title by just 3.5 points over Nash, who had earlier suffered from damage in the first race which ultimately cost him dearly.

“Champion again, that’s simply great,” exclaimed Comini. “Last year I won with my guts, this time with my head…

“It was a difficult challenge but we made it, and it has really been a collective effort. I want to thank everybody at Leopard Racing, at WRT and at Volkswagen Motorsport, and give special thanks to Jean-Karl, whose help was really crucial this weekend to get the success.

“It has been a tough season, we had a difficult start with the car, but then we improved race after race. At this moment, I can only say that I am very, very happy.”
