Tom Ingram set the pace in the first free practice session for the British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park, with the Speedworks driver flying to a time of 1:26.049 in the closing minutes of the session.
Ingram rose to the top of the times with two minutes left to beat BKR’s Árón Smith to the top time, with the Irishman having earlier been on top of the times for much of the 40-minute session.
Halfords Yuasa Racing’s Gordon Shedden was third fastest, with the reigning champion having been languishing near the bottom of the timesheets until the final ten minutes, when he put in a lap to go four tenths shy of the pace.
Motorbase racer Andrew Jordan was fourth fastest in his Ford, ahead of the leading WSR BMW of Jack Goff in fifth, 0.658 seconds off the pace.
Power Maxed Racing’s Hunter Abbott was an impressive sixth fastest in his Chevrolet Cruze, putting in a rapid lap in the closing minutes of the session, having earlier been in the top ten for much of the session.
Eurotech Racing’s Daniel Lloyd was seventh fastest, with the Honda racer competing in just his second weekend at the wheel of the Civic Type R.
WSR driver Sam Tordoff was eighth, with MG’s Josh Cook and Team BMR’s Colin Turkington completing the top ten times.
In the end, 11 drivers were with a second of the pace, with Team HARD’s Jake Hill in 11th being the last driver under the mark.
Jason Plato ended up down in 25th in his Subaru, with the former champion having suffered from smoke coming out of his car in the latter part of the session.
Second practice takes place at 12:45 BST, with qualifying following at 15:20 BST.
