Despite coming away from the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) season opener at Hockenheim third in the drivers’ standings, Team ABT Sportsline’s Edoardo Mortara was critical of the amount of incidents that occurred in the first two races of the year.

The Italian, who took the win in the first race, explained that there were “a few complete idiots in the DTM, who still believe you can win a race in the first, second or third turn.”

With the performance weights coming into play after qualifying for the first race of the weekend, it showed in the respective pace that all eight Audis had, with four retiring on the Sunday.

“It’s a shame that in a high-caliber championship like the DTM we keep experiencing things like we did today,” said Mortara, who finished 11th in the feature race, following Timo Glock being disqualified.

“Body contacts and accidents are good for the show – but everything has its limits. Unfortunately, there are a few complete idiots in the DTM who still believe you can win a race in the first, second or third turn.”

The 29-year-old felt that both Martin Tomczyk and Maximillian Götz were a bit too robust in their passes during the initial stages, having felt that a top five finish was possible.

“I can’t understand why they got away without any penalties because they destroyed my race. That’s frustrating. My car was great and I started on a new set of tires.”
