Colin Turkington top in thrilling final race

Colin Turkington took victory in the final British Touring Car Championship race of the day at Brands Hatch, fending off a late charge from Honda’s Matt Neal and MG’s Jason Plato.

Turkington led an eBay Motors 1-2-3 at the start of the race, but three soon became two at the front of the field when Nick Foster was handed a drive-through-penalty for having been out of position at the start of the race.

There was once again drama on the opening lap of the race, with Airwaves Racing’s Fabrizio Giovanardi, like Alain Menu in race one, losing the back of his car through Paddock Hill bend and spinning into the infield. The Italian would drop down to 23rd as a result.

Further around on the opening lap, Glynn Geddie was turned around at Graham Hill Bend, whilst Marc Hynes and Martin Depper once again made contact, pitching the Pirtek Racing driver into the barriers for the second successive race.

The safety car was called on lap 12 after Tom Ingram crashed along the Cooper Straight and was sent into the barriers, the Speedworks Motorsport driver having been defending hard against the charging Menu for 11th position.

When the safety car returned to the pits at the end of lap 15 it was Plato who began to make the most progress, first passing team-mate Sam Tordoff for sixth at Druids and then Adam Morgan’s new Mercedes at Paddock Hill on the following lap.

Plato continued to make rapid progress in the closing laps of the race, including passing Honda’s Gordon Shedden for fourth on lap 20. The former double champion tried the move again on Neal a couple of laps later, but the second Honda driver was wise to the move and put up a strong defence. In the end both drivers closed on Collard for second and, with just two laps to go, both passed the eBay Motors driver along the start straight.

Further back, Menu improved to fifth with a penultimate lap pass on Shedden, having passed seventh-place finisher Mat Jackson on the previous lap. Jack Goff, Dave Newsham and Morgan completed the top ten, with Newsham taking home his first points of the weekend.

Race one and two winner Andrew Jordan faded towards the end of the race, dropping to 13th behind Rob Austin and Sam Tordoff.

Jordan leads the championship after the first meeting with 47 points, ahead of Neal on 45 and Turkington on 44.
