Matt Neal cleared to race

Matt Neal will compete in this weekend’s British Touring Car Championship meeting at Silverstone, after being cleared to race despite breaking his finger.

Neal’s participation in the event was put in doubt after he sustained the injury in the two week break between the Rockingham and Silverstone rounds, although Neal himself had remained confident about racing as the broken finger was on his right hand, with gear changes putting stress on the left hand.

And after completing a pre-race shakedown on Thursday the Honda driver was cleared by a doctor to continue his championship challenge.

It is the third time in three years that Neal has sustained an injury to his hand at a crucial point in the season, but will provide him with a positive not on which to build, after a difficult few weeks which saw him drop from first in the championship to fourth after a difficult weekend at Rockingham.

Although Neal has been allowed to race, he will require surgery after the weekend’s action to insert plates into the finger on Tuesday.
