Rockenfeller top in first Austria practice

Mike Rockenfeller set the fastest time in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters first practice session at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, with Dirk Werner second quickest and Gary Paffett third.

Rockenfeller set a time of 1:27.271 to go 0.182 seconds faster than BMW’s Werner. Current championship leader Paffett, driving for Mercedes, was third, 0.204 seconds back.

Once again Audi were the strongest of the three German manufacturers, taking the fastest time and having five cars in total inside the top ten.

Fourth quickest was Audi’s Timo Scheider, whilst BMW’s Martin Tomczyk was fifth fastest to make it four German drivers inside the top five positions.

Portugese Filipe Albuquerque was sixth fastest, ahead of Spain’s Roberto Merhi in seventh, Sweden’s Mattias Ekström in eighth, France’s Adrien Tambay in ninth and Britain’s Jamie Green in tenth.

Susie Wolff was the top female driver in 12th, although the Mercedes driver ended the session in the gravel trap as she made a mistake towards the end. Edoardo Mortara, 15th quickest, also ended up in the gravel trap.

Less than one second covered the top eighteen drivers.

Second practice takes place at 0900 CEST on Saturday.
