BMW’s Colin Turkington put in the fastest lap of the day so far in second practice for the British Touring Car Championship at Knockhill, as rear-wheel drive cars secured the top three positions.
The Northern Irishman, who considers Knockhill to be the closest he gets to a ‘home’ race, set the fastest lap of 52.336 seconds with less than a minute left in the session, as once again times continued to tumble despite the session starting on a dry circuit.
Subaru duo Ash Sutton and James Cole were second and third fastest respectively, with both drivers having enjoyed spells at the top of the timesheets at some stage during the 45 minutes on track.
Honda’s Matt Neal left it until late-on in the session to go fourth fastest, having spent much of the practice outside the top twenty drivers.
Eurotech Racing’s Jack Goff was once again a contender at the sharp end of the times in fifth fastest, ahead of the Pirtek BMW of Ander Jordan in sixth.
Subaru’s Jason Plato, who was briefly the pace-setter just before the halfway mark, was seventh, just over two tenths off the pace.
Scot Aiden Moffat continued to post times inside the top half of the field and was eighth, whilst BMW’s Rob Collard and AmD’s Ant Whorton-Eales completed the top ten.
Championship leader and circuit employee Gordon Shedden was just outside the top ten in 11th, despite having to carry the maximum 75 kg of success ballast in his Honda.
The session had to be briefly red-flagged with six minutes to go as a damaged piece of barrier had to be retrieved from the circuit.
On a dry circuit the session proved to be much more competitive, with 26 drivers within a second of the pace.
Qualifying is scheduled to take place at 16:10 BST and will be streamed live at www.itv.com/btcc.
