Dan Cammish insists he is fully focussed on helping NAPA Racing UK to win the Teams’ and Manufacturers’ titles in the British Touring Car Championship on race day at Brands Hatch.
Cammish qualified as the leading Ford on Saturday around the Kent circuit, just one hundredth of a second ahead of team-mate Daniel Rowbottom.
Despite being in a battle for third overall in the drivers’ standings, with Laser Tools Racing’s Jake Hill and Rowbottom, Cammish insists that helping the outfit to win the Teams’ and Manufacturers’ titles is his main priority for Sunday’s three races.
Alliance Racing holds just a one-point advantage over EXCLER8 Motorsport in the Manufacturers / Constructors championship, and NAPA Racing UK has a mere three-point lead over Team Vertu in the Teams’ standings.
With that in mind, Cammish is targeting victory in the opening race on Sunday – and the 36-year-old feels that his second-place starting position may actually work in his favour over the pole-position slot which Daryl DeLeon secured.
“I think we maximised our time,” said Cammish to TouringCars.Net. “Me and Dan [Rowbottom] both got out and said they were not only great laps but we had a great car to drive as well.
“I’ve got five seconds [of TOCA Turbo Boost] and Dan a bit more with nine, but ultimately you give either of our cars a little bit more and they’d be on pole.
“It’s so close, I don’t know how can come to this circuit that’s so difficult and the top four are covered by less than a tenth of a second.
“The car was fantastic, and it sets us up for a good day on Sunday. When you know you’re that close you always wish you could have found a bit more, but hand on heart my lap was really, really strong.
“The only way I could have probably gone quicker is to take more risk and it’ll either stick or it doesn’t and that means hitting kerbs a bit harder.
“I’m happy and well done to Daryl. Hopefully we can get a good launch. You want to be on pole, because you want the plaudits but pole, but I’d probably ask ‘can I start second now’? It’s a terrible place to start on pole here – I know from experience. You slide down towards the wall.
“I can’t think of a worse pole position in motorsport. I’m surprised they haven’t moved the grid back by a row over the years.
“Maybe we can have a bit of a go at him in the opening couple of corners. He’s quite new to it – he’s still learning. He’s clearly got a good car on a Saturday. Can he do it on a Sunday?
“As far as I’m concerned, we’ve got a good opportunity to go forward. That’s my job – to go out there and try and win race one and I’ve got the opportunity to do that. We’ve got a good race car – we’ll make some tweaks to make sure it’s the best we can have, but I’ll try and win the race.”
Cammish holds a four-point advantage over Hill and an 18-point buffer over Rowbottom in the standings, but he says he is predominantly focussed on the teams’ perspective.
“Dan and I are fighting for third [in the championship], there’s no doubt about that, and it’s been nip and tuck at times in the points. But the one thing, more than third, is the Teams’ and Manufacturers’ titles. That’s very important.
“Of course I want to be third, but I also want us to win the Teams’ and Manufacturers’ titles. We need to fight, but we also need to think about the bigger picture for this team.
“It’s not the easiest of days for anyone to manage, but we need to find a way to do it in the right way.”
