Tom Ingram becomes a two-time champion with victory at Brands Hatch

Tom Ingram became a two-time British Touring Car Champion with a sublime victory in race two at Brands Hatch, having to deal with two safety car restarts and Ash Sutton making his way up to second.

Pole-sitter Dan Cammish was passed by Team Vertu’s Tom Chilton away from the line, with WSR’s Charles Rainford following past into second at Druids.

Both Ingram and Sutton made good progress on the opening lap and were in third and fifth respectively, with Ingram then diving inside Rainford for fourth at Paddock Hill Bend at the start of lap two.

With Sutton behind NAPA Racing UK team-mate Cammish, Cammish quickly moved out of the way for his team-mate up Hawthorn Hill to give Sutton fourth further around the lap.

Chilton then yielded to team-mate Ingram at Surtees on the third lap, with the Team Vertu duo looking comfortable at the front early on.

Sutton capitalised when Rainford’s car stepped out of line at Hawthorn’s Bend on the fourth lap, and Rainford quickly found himself being passed by several cars, as Cammish, Daniel Rowbottom, Gordon Shedden and Senna Proctor all followed through.

Rainford was then shovelled off the circuit by Árón Taylor-Smith in the braking zone for Paddock Hill Bend at the start of lap five, prompting a safety car period as his BMW was embedded in the barriers.

After three laps following the safety car, racing resumed on lap nine but only for two laps, as contact between Toyota duo Josh Cook and Taylor-Smith at Hailwoods Hill sent the latter spinning into the barriers and out of the race.

Drama then struck behind the safety car, as Chilton slowed from second with a reported alternator issue, limping off the circuit to retire from the race.

That promoted Sutton to second directly behind title rival Ingram, but when the race resumed Ingram, on the soft-compound tyre, quickly pulled clear by over a second in less than half a lap.

Ultimately, Sutton lacked the pace to take the fight to Ingram and fell adrift of his title rival, as Ingram claimed his 40th BTCC win on his way to a second BTCC drivers’ title.

Sutton finished in second, whilst Team Vertu’s Proctor completed the podium after passing Cammish three laps from the finish.

Shedden claimed fourth from Cammish along the Brabham Straight on the penultimate lap, leaving Cammish to take the chequered flag in fifth ahead of team-mate Rowbottom in sixth.

Laser Tools Racing’s Jake Hill was seventh, ahead of the Toyota of Cook in eighth, WSR’s Aiden Moffat in ninth and Team Vertu’s Adam Morgan in tenth. Morgan had earlier been knocked out of third by Rowbottom at Druids on the opening lap.

Restart Racing’s Chris Smiley was the leading Independent in 11th, keeping alive his relatively slim title chances into the season finale.

After the race, Ingram randomly drew the top nine drivers to be reversed for race three, giving Moffat pole with Cook alongside.

Race three is scheduled to get underway at 17:30 BST.
