Colin Turkington philosophical about lost Snetterton win

Colin Turkington was philosophical about losing victory in the opening British Touring Car Championship race at Snetterton, with the BMW driver admitting that subsequent strong results might have been more challenging had he won.

Turkington edged closer to the lead of the drivers’ championship standings in Norfolk, despite spinning out of the lead in the first race of the day.

The Northern Irishman recovered in that race to take seventh, with the resulting reduced success ballast then allowing him to go on and claim second in race two and third in the final race of the day.

As a result Turkington is just two points behind leader Gordon Shedden, and he admitted that the form he displayed consistently throughout the weekend might not have been possible had he won the opening race of the day.

“It’s been a very good weekend for me and the team as a whole,” said Turkington. “Two podiums mean a lot of points and I’m now only two points off the Championship lead, which is exactly the kind of place I need to be as we get towards the business end of the season.

“I was pretty frustrated to lose the win in race one because I was concentrating on just controlling things at the front, but you never know; I may not have had this big an overall score if I’d won that one, so I’m taking this whole weekend as major positive.”

WSR Team Principal Dick Bennetts was pleased with the team’s performances, which also saw Rob Collard remain in title contention as well as a maintained margin for Team BMW in the team’s championship standings.

“It’s been a very good day for Team BMW,” added the New Zealander. “Four podiums, two fastest laps, highest-scoring team, increased leads in the Teams’ and Manufacturers’ Championships and Colin and Rob within four points of the Drivers’ Championship lead. There’s not much more we could have asked for.

“As usual, we didn’t have the out-and-out fastest car this weekend, but we used some of the data gathered here in testing to good effect and that’s definitely helped us this weekend. We leave Snetterton in good shape.”
