Jamie Green: “Today was quite a long race”

After four races in the 2017 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season, Jamie Green is clearly in the championship hunt, having closed the gap on current points leader Lucas Auer to just 16 points, following the final action for the DTM at the Lausitzring.

Green also joins countryman Gary Paffett and five-time champion Bernd Schneider as one of a trio of drivers to have taken three wins at the Brandenburg circuit.

Having made his move past pole sitter Robert Wickens for the lead into turn one on lap 31, the Brit calmly extended a lead, which ended up being an Audi Sport 1-2, with Mattias Ekström showing great pace having pitted on lap one.

“I’m really happy to get my second win of the year in only the first four races,” said the Leicester driver, who won from Ekström by 6.295 seconds at the end of the race.

“I was sitting behind Robert in second place for most of the race, but I timed my move to perfection and managed to open up a gap. Mattias was there as well in the end, but with my second win of the year, I’m really happy.”

Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass was ecstatic after five of the Audi RS5 DTMs finished in the top seven, with Mike Rockenfeller also employing the same strategy as Ekström, pitting at the end of lap one, eventually taking fifth place.

“A fantastic day for us and an incredible race from everybody, as almost all our drivers moved forward. A great win for Jamie and a good aggressive strategy from Mattias, pitting at the very beginning like Mike did, so in all, a really fantastic race for us,” he admitted.

With significant strides forward made during the second race, with only Loïc Duval the sole driver from the Ingolstadt ranks to not score, Audi Sport are only ten points behind Mercedes-AMG Motorsport heading to the Hungaroring in two weeks’ time.
