Jamie Green storms to Lausitz race two victory, leading an Audi Sport 1-2

Audi Sport’s Jamie Green took advantage of greater race pace once again take another win in the 2017 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season, following his win on Sunday at the Hockenheim opener.

The Team Rosberg driver finished 6.295 seconds ahead of Team Abt Sportsline’s Mattias Ekström for the win, with the Swede’s RS5 DTM breaking down on the slowdown lap.

Pole sitter Robert Wickens was able to keep a charging Gary Paffett at bay for the final step of the podium, with Mike Rockenfeller opting to pit at the same time as Ekström at the end of lap one to make the strategy count, eventually finishing fifth.

Nico Müller took sixth place in his 50th DTM race start at the Lausitzring, after having fought off the challenges of both René Rast and Maxime Martin, who finished seventh and eighth respectively.

The pair restarted their battle in the latter stages of the race, with Rast making the decisive move past the Belgian just three laps from the end into turn one.

Defending champion Marco Wittmann was able to make some inroads into the points, having finished ninth ahead of current points leader Lucas Auer, who took the final points-paying position, having started from 15th initially.

Auer was able to get up into the top ten early on after the first two or three laps, but would be fighting against Wittmann for the remainder of the race. This was even with having fought his way past into turn one on lap 29, before losing the place halfway half a lap later. Wittmann would only get a warning from Race Control for excess

Edoardo Mortara made steady progress through the field, until both he and Maro Engel again decided to pit last on lap 26. Mortara was able to make his way up past Engel, who was ordered to give back the place he took from Augusto Farfus, having gone outside track limits on the outside of turn one on lap 33.

Engel made his way back pat the Brazilian for what would eventually turn out to be 12th place, whilst Paul Di Resta was the lowest-placed finisher from Stuttgart down in 13th.

Farfus would end up 14th at the chequered flag, ahead of Timo Glock, Bruno Spengler and Tom Blomqvist, whose race was ruined by being handed a five-second penalty for a jump start off the front row. Loïc Duval was the last of classified finishers, having also tried to employ a different strategy to his stablemates, with it not working.

The Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters heads to the Hungaroring in a month’s time, with the third round of the championship taking place between the 16th and 18th of June.
