Ash Sutton admits second win was ‘a long time coming’

Ash Sutton says that his second career victory in the British Touring Car Championship was ‘a long time coming’ after the Subaru driver took a first win of the season in race two at Oulton Park.

Sutton has shown he has the pace to challenge for wins on several occasions already in 2017, having taken three podium finishes prior to his win on Sunday at Oulton Park.

In race two, Sutton started from third on the grid and was up to second by the first corner as he got off to a stronger start than Honda’s Matt Neal.

On the second lap of the race Sutton, who was running the soft tyre, passed BMW’s Andrew Jordan for a lead he wouldn’t lose thereafter, despite BMW’s Rob Collard keeping the pressure on.

The 23-year-old was pleased to add to his win tally, saying that his second win, and first for Subaru, had been overdue.

“It’s great to ‘spin it around’ for Subaru, but it’s been a long time coming,” said Sutton. “The car has got the pace, and it’s just about trying to get everything to click into place. I’d like to think we’ve just shown that with the soft tyre and ballast on, so fingers crossed that we can carry on the momentum.”

Despite Collard closing the gap in the mid-part of the race, Sutton was not concerned about losing his lead at any point once he was out in front.

“We weren’t pushing. With the soft tyres and the amount of ballast, I just tried to get the gap I wanted and manage it. Yes, he [Collard] was catching, but I had time in the bag, so I could have pushed it if we needed to.

“It was a real unknown how the tyre was going to perform, so I’m actually really pleased with the performance of the car and the tyre.”

Despite moving to sixth overall in the drivers’ championship and 37 points from the championship lead, Sutton admits that going for the drivers’ title is still going to be a big ask for him.

“We’ve got a long shot, don’t get me wrong, but last year Colin [Turkington] was in a worse situation than where I am now, so who says it can’t be done.

“I’ve literally just got to maximise the points, play it safe and keep it on the black stuff.”
