Gordon Shedden tips former title rival Sam Tordoff for British GT success

Gordon Shedden has tipped former British Touring Car Championship title rival Sam Tordoff for success as the latter prepares for his first season in the British GT Championship.

Tordoff, who narrowly missed out on a maiden touring car crown by a mere two points at the season finale at Brands Hatch, announced in November his decision to switch to a Barwell Motorsport-run Lamborghini Hurrican alongside former BTCC entrant Liam Giffin for the upcoming season.

Shedden, under contract at the works Honda outfit until the end of the 2017 season, believes Tordoff is set to enjoy a strong maiden campaign, though he wasn’t surprised by the decision to switch categories.

“It’s his decision. I know they certainly asked questions of a few different teams to try and find them a berth in 2017, so I don’t think he was a hundred percent destined to move to GTs.” said Shedden.

“That’s the route he’s taken now, and you’ve got to say he’ll go really well in that, I think he’ll perform fantastically in that championship.”

The Scot also tipped the other rising talents in the championship to take up the marker of performance Tordoff set last season, admitting in an ideal world he would like all of his competition to be championship winners.

“You want to race against the best in the world – I’d like thirty-two champions on the grid, that would be the ultimate [goal]. Sam did a great job last year, I’m sure he’ll enjoy his GTs, equally I’m sure there will be somebody who takes Sam’s place, whether that be in the same team or a different team, will take that step forward to give the kinds of performances that Sam did last year.”
