Edoardo Mortara snatches Hungaroring feature race pole

Team Abt Sportsline’s Edoardo Mortara took a second successive pole position at the Hungaroring this afternoon, leading an Audi Sport front-row lockout ahead of team mate Mattias Ekström.

The Italian driver was the only one to break the 1m35s barrier, posting a 1:34.984 around the 4.381-km circuit on his last flying lap, with Ekström denying points leader Marco Wittmann a spot on the front row by just 0.001 seconds.

Jamie Green and Miguel Molina saw Audi occupy four of the top five spots on the grid, ahead of Team RBM’s Maxime Martin and Tom Blomqvist, with the Anglo-Swede currently under investigation for blocking during the session

Robert Wickens was the best of the Mercedes drivers in eighth place, 0.404 seconds off the pace set by Mortara, whilst Nico Müller and Miguel Molina helped towards Audi’s title efforts by completing the top ten.

Daniel Juncadella was just outside the top ten, missing out by just 0.058 seconds, ahead of António Félix da Costa and two-time champion Timo Scheider.

It was another difficult session for the majority of the BMW Motorsport drivers, as Augusto Farfus and Timo Glock would lead the remainder of the Munich outfit in 14th and 15th place.

Even with a strong showing on Saturday, 2013 champion Mike Rockenfeller was only able to manage 16th fastest, ahead of Team Schnitzer’s Martin Tomczyk.

Christian Vietoris was the next best placed Stuttgart driver in 18th, just ahead of Bruno Spengler, with Lucas Auer, Paul Di Resta, Gary Paffett, Maximilian Götz and Felix Rosenqvist completing the grid for the feature race.

Following on from qualifying, Audi Sport’s ranks have gained another five kilos of performance weight, putting all eight cars on 1,120kgs, whilst Mercedes drop a further five kilos to 1,125kgs. BMW, however, remain the lightest of all three brands at 1,112.5kgs.

The penultimate DTM feature race before the Hockenheim finale starts at 1513 CEST (BST + 1), lasting for 60 minutes plus one lap.
