Andy Yan makes it four consecutive wins in Shanghai

Andy Yan won both of the TCR Asia Series races in Shanghai, making it four consecutive wins for the Liqui Moly Team Engstler driver, who now dominates the drivers’ championship standings.

Round 5

Whilst Team Thailand’s Tin Sritrai led as the lights went out, the Thai ace lost out to Hong Kong racer Yan half-way around Turn One on the opening lap.

Yan was then able to ease out just enough of a margin over the Honda racer to take his third win of the year and extend his championship lead.

Sritrai held on to finish second, despite running of the circuit whilst pressuring Yan on lap four, ahead of Champ Motorsport’s Henry Ho, who completed the podium in his Honda Civic TCR. Henry Ho had earlier got past fellow Honda racer Michael Ho for the position on lap three.

Michael Ho took fourth, ahead of Kevin Tse’s Team work Motorsport Volkswagen in fifth and the second Liqui Moly Team Engstler Volkswagen of Filipe Clemente de Souza in sixth. The two Golf GTi racers enjoyed a titanic duel at the half-way stage of the race, with Tse ultimately prevailing.

Michael Ho, however, was later disqualified from the race for an infringement of the regulations in PArc Fermé.

TCR Asia rookie Neric Wei took the chequered flag in seventh in his maiden race, despite a mid-race spin, ahead of the SEAT of Terence Tse in eighth, who was involved in a couple of half slides on the opening lap.

Teamwork Motorsport’s Bill O’Brien and Viper Niza Racing’s Douglas Khoo were the last of the classified finishers in ninth and tenth respectively, with both having spun of their own accord several times during the race.

Kenneth Ma failed to take the start of the race in his overhauled Ford Focus TCR, having earlier on completed a handful of laps of running on Saturday.

Round 6

At the start of the race Terence Tse led from pole position, whilst fellow front row starter Neric Wei dropped to sixth place before turn one after a poor getaway.

By Turn 7, Filipe Clemente de Souza had taken the lead from Tse, whilst championship front runners Tin Sritrai and Andy Yan were up to second and third respectively, from eighth and seventh on the grid.

At Turn 11 Sritrai took the lead from de Souza, whilst Yan also passed for second, albeit with contact from his team-mate.

On lap four Sritrai suffered mechanical failure on the front-left of his car whilst leading into Turn One, handing Yan a lead which he would not lose to take his fourth win in succession.

That handed Kevin Tse second, with De Souza having to settle for third having also lost out to Tse early on in the race.

Newcomer Neric Wei took fourth after a close battle with Terence Tse for the position, the duo swapping places several times in the race. Both drivers ran out of talent heading into Turn 6 on the penultimate lap and suffered a huge lock-up, which was then replicated by Tse on the final lap which handed Wei the position.

Henry Ho’s championship challenge suffered a setback as he retired from the race after the opening lap, retiring his Honda to the pits.

Michael Ho also stopped after the opening lap, having started from the pitlane, whilst Kenneth Ma again failed to start the race in his FRD ford Focus.

Yan’s victory hands him a huge 67-point lead in the championship over Kevin Tse, with only two rounds left in the championship. As a result of his retirement, Sritrai is now a significant 79 points adrift of the points lead, with the Thai driver fourth overall in the standings.

The next round of the TCR Asia Series takes place in two months’ time at the brand new Zhejiang Circuit in China on the 20th and 21st October 2016.
