Yvan Muller wins WTCC finale in Qatar

Yvan Muller won the final race of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in Qatar to secure the runner-up spot in the championship, whilst Norbert Michelisz scooped the Independents Trophy.

The race lasted just one lap before the safety car was deployed, thanks to an accident between LADA’s Nicky Catsburg, Münnich Motorsport’s Stefano D’Aste and ROAL Motorsport’s Tom Chilton at turn five.

Four laps behind the safety car then followed whilst the damaged cars were attempted to be moved by the marshals, with the race resuming on lap six.

Muller then took the lead from pole man John Filippi, although the Campos Racing driver turned in on the Citroën and spun out, being subsequently hit with a drive-through penalty for a jump start to add insult to injury.

Muller was then able to comfortably lead the race ahead of Ma Qing Hua, taking his sixth win of the season and ensuring he finished as the runner-up in the championship for the second consecutive season.

Zengő Motorsport’s Michelisz finished in third, a sixth podium of the season for the Hungarian giving him top honours in the Yokohama Trophy.

On his WTCC swansong, Sébastien Loeb could manage only fourth, unable to challenge Michelisz, ahead of the independent C-Elysée of Mehdi Benanni in fifth, who lost out on the independent’s trophy as a result.

Campos Racing’s Hugo Valente finished in sixth as the leading Chevrolet driver, ahead of Honda’s Gabriele Tarquini in seventh.

José María López failed to make significant progress in the race, taking eighth after a couple of passes late in the race, the Argentine having dropped to 12th in the first half of the race.

Honda’s Tiago Monteiro and LADA’s Nicolas Lapierre completed the top ten, having battled for position in the latter laps.
