Mat Jackson lands maiden Motorbase pole

Mat Jackson claimed his first outright British Touring Car Championship pole position with Motorbase Performance at Rockingham, ahead of Aron Smith and Gordon Shedden.

Jackson’s pole was also his Motorbase team’s first since joining the championship, as he romped to a lap record in his Ford Focus.

Times quickly tumbled in the early stages as the drivers flooded the track, with Jason Plato setting the initial pace on a 1:22.739s. Jackson then improved on that in his Ford Focus, before Tom Ingram jumped into provisional pole with a 1:22.553s.

Plato was the first man to dip under the second practice benchmark but Ingram was never far behind, first improving to within 0.008s of the championship leader before setting the pace for a second time.

That was quickly bettered by Jack Goff, who was the first man to better the existing qualifying record, who was quickly beaten by Aron Smith, before Jackson delivered his pole lap – a 1:22.087s.

There was a scare for Jackson after a red flag towards the end of the session threatened to rob him of pole for a second successive race weekend, but with Shedden only improving to third on his final lap Jackson secured his first pole in six years.

Despite being unable to hang onto a front row start, Goff nevertheless scored a best qualifying position in the championship to date, in front of an impressive Ingram.

Race One gets underway at 11:37 BST on Sunday.
