Following on from a rain-affected second practice, qualifying for race 11 of the 2015 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) at Moscow Raceway saw defending champion Marco Wittmann take pole position for the sprint race, as the sun made a welcome return.
The Team RMG driver posted the best time of 1:28.810 around the 3.931-km circuit within the last two minutes, with Pascal Wehrlein and Jamie Green completing the top three.
This saw all three manufacturers represented in the top three, with Witmann, Wehrlein and Green setting their best laps in the closing stages. The trio were split by a mere 0.175 seconds.
BMW’s performance in the dry conditions is reflective of the performance weights issued for this weekend, as Timo Glock, Tom Blomqvist and Bruno Spengler made it four M4 DTMs in the top ten.
The trio will line up fourth, fifth and seventh on the grid. Current points leader Mattias Ekström, who is racing with one of the heaviest cars on the grid, was just 0.275 seconds off the top spot in sixth.
Miguel Molina and Nico Müller fought their way into the top ten, as the pair were eighth and tenth fastest, with Mercedes’ Daniel Juncadella posting the ninth fastest time.
Adrian Tambay narrowly missed out on a top ten spot by just 0.037 seconds, as the Frenchman went slightly off line to try and move up the times nearer the end of the 20-minute session.
Edoardo Mortara was the lowest placed of the top three in the title standings, as the Italian was fractionally faster that Paul Di Resta for 12th place.
2013 Champion Mike Rockenfeller will start behind the Scot in 14th, ahead of Maximillian Götz and last year’s race winner, Maxime Martin, who featured at the top of the table at the early part of the session.
Zandvoort race winner António Félix da Costa was running in the top ten, but could place as high as 17th during a very close-fought session.
Lucas Auer and Antonio Giovinazzi occupy 18th and 19th, ahead of veteran Gary Paffett, with Augusto Farfus, Robert Wickens, Martin Tomczyk and Christian Vietoris completing the grid for race 11. The 24-strong field were split by just 1.068 seconds.
Race one, which lasts for 40 minutes + 1 lap, starts at 1530 CEST (1430 BST).
